One of the identified causes of bedwetting in children is the low capacity of the bladder. This means that the bladder can store only a small volume of urine, and when this particular volume is reached, the reflex is to urinate. Since the kidneys, while filtering the blood, constantly produce water, urine will always be deposited in the bladder. With the low capacity of the bladder, urination becomes more frequent.
If, based on physical examination, the doctor finds out that the cause of bed wetting and accidental wetting of a child is the low-capacity bladder, the solution to overcoming the bedwetting problem is to increase the capacity of the bladder. This can be done by conducting the bladder stretching exercises.
Essentially, this bedwetting solution practices the child to hold his urine for increasingly longer periods of time. Such will eventually condition the bladder to store more urine. As more urine is stored, the bladder’s capacity increases. The bladder stretching exercises offer an ideal solution for a bedwetting problem with a specific cause.
To carry out the bladder stretching exercise, the parent must be an active participant, especially in guiding the child and in monitoring the child’s progress. But the parent need not worry about being unable to succeed while employing this bedwetting solution. There are only two steps involved.
The first step in this bedwetting solution is to make the child take in as much fluids as possible. The fluids may come from drinking water, milk, fruit juice, and even soup.
The second step is to make the child hold in his urine for as long as he can. This is done during daytime and can be the most challenging part. To determine how much progress the child is making, the parent or guardian can keep a record about how long the child can keep himself from accidental wetting.
The parent will notice that indeed, the child is gaining control over his bladder. This is because the bedwetting child increases the length of time he can hold his urine by approximately two to three minutes everyday.
The bladder stretching exercises is one of the most effective solutions for daytime accidental wettings (medically called diurnal enuresis). These exercises may also significantly reduce the frequency of bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis). But the parent must remember that this bedwetting solution does not give instantaneous results. That is, the bedwetting cannot be conquered overnight. But the bladder stretching exercises do produce long-term and even permanent results.
Lastly, this particular bedwetting solution is great when the cause is low bladder capacity. If the bedwetting or accidental wetting is caused by another reason, such as the presence of an infection, no amount of bladder stretching exercise can help stop the enuresis.
